Life has a peculiar way of testing our resolve. It often comes through the words of others—well-meaning friends, family, or even complete strangers. Sometimes, it's subtle: a glance, a raised eyebrow, a faint sigh. Other times, it's direct: cutting remarks, dismissive comments, or outright disbelief in your abilities. You’ve probably heard it before. “You’re too young.” “You’re getting on a bit.” “You’ve been at this for years, and nothing has changed.” “What if it doesn’t work?” “Why don’t you just go back to working for someone else?” These words can sting, especially when they come at moments of self-doubt or vulnerability. But here’s the truth: those comments are a gift. Yes, you read that right—a gift. Because each time someone doubts you, undermines you, or questions your dream, they’re handing you fuel. And it’s your choice whether to let that fuel ignite a fire of action or extinguish the flame of your ambition. Why People Doubt You Let’s face it—most of the time, the people who doubt you aren’t intentionally malicious. Their words often stem from their own insecurities, fears, or limited understanding of what it takes to achieve greatness. They project their doubts onto you because they lack the courage to chase their own dreams. But here’s where you have an advantage: you do have that courage. You have a vision, a goal, and a fire within you. The question is, will you let their words smother that fire, or will you turn their negativity into rocket fuel to propel you forward? Prove Yourself Right—or Them Wrong When someone tells you, “You’re too young,” let it remind you that youth is a time for bold risks and limitless potential. Think of entrepreneurs like Mark Zuckerberg to Michael Jackson, who changed the world in their teens and twenties. When someone says, “You’re too old,” remember that legends like Colonel Sanders and Vera Wang found their success later in life. Wisdom, experience, and resilience often come with age, and those qualities are invaluable. Whatever they say, let it push you into a headspace of focus, action, and repetition. Let it remind you that success isn’t about proving anyone wrong—it’s about proving yourself right. Focus, Action, and Repetition The path to success is paved with consistency. Focus on your goal, no matter how distant it may seem. Take action every single day, even when progress feels slow. Repeat the process, over and over, until momentum builds and results follow. People may mock your persistence. They may scoff at your belief that slow progress is still progress. But remember: Michelangelo spent four years painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Thomas Edison failed 1,000 times before perfected the lightbulb. J.K. Rowling was rejected by 12 publishers before Harry Potter saw the light of day. Your journey will be no different. It will require grit, resilience, and an unwavering belief in yourself. It’s Your Dream—Own It Here’s the hard truth: you cannot rely on others to believe in your dream. It’s not their dream; it’s yours. They may never see the vision you hold in your heart. They may never understand the sacrifices you make or the battles you fight. But that’s okay. You don’t need their validation. All you need is the fuel their doubts provide and the fire of determination within you. So the next time someone doubts you, smile. Thank them silently for the gift of fuel. Then go back to work. Prove yourself right. Build your dream. Achieve the success you know you’re capable of. Because one day, when you’ve climbed the mountain and reached the summit, those same voices will say, “I always believed in you.” And by then, it won’t matter—because you’ll already know what you’re capable of. Five years. That’s how long I’ve been working on growing Daniel Ernest Consulting. And in those five years, I’ve experienced every setback and struggle you could imagine in building a business. Sometimes, it feels like you’re pushing so hard, but you’re not seeing the fruits of your labor—like you’re spinning your wheels in the mud, wondering if anything will break through. But recently, I came across a story that hit home and reshaped the way I see my business. It’s the story of the Chinese bamboo tree. For those of you who don’t know, the Chinese bamboo tree doesn’t break through the soil for five long years. Five years of nothing visible. You plant the seed, water it, and nurture it, but to the outside world, it seems like nothing is happening. It’s only after those five years that the bamboo tree suddenly bursts through the ground, growing up to 90 feet in just weeks. But here’s the catch—during those five years, it wasn’t doing nothing. Beneath the surface, it was growing a strong and deep root system. It was laying the foundation for that explosive growth. Without those years of invisible groundwork, the bamboo tree wouldn’t be able to support itself when it finally took off. I started thinking, maybe my business—maybe our businesses—are a lot like the Chinese bamboo tree. The Setbacks and Struggles of Building a Business Over the past five years, Daniel Ernest Consulting has seen its fair share of challenges. The sleepless nights, the deals that fell through at the last minute, the financial pressures that sometimes felt unbearable—it’s been a journey of hard work, and, at times, I wondered if the breakthrough would ever come. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve had moments of doubt. When you put your heart and soul into something and it doesn’t take off right away, it’s easy to question if you’re doing the right thing. There were times when I wondered if I’d ever see the results I dreamed of back when I started. But then I think about the Chinese bamboo tree. Maybe, just like that tree, my business has been developing the root system it needs to support explosive growth. Maybe those sleepless nights, the tough lessons, and the setbacks were all part of the foundation.
